About 5 miles north of Kramer Junction on the 395 outside of Boron, CA is an abandoned prison. FPC Boron ("Federal Prison Camp") shut down in around 2001 judging by the dates on most of the forms found around the facility. The facility itself does not appear to be a typical prison.. driving up to it, it looks mostly like an industrial complex. There are about 28 houses in a circle slightly south of the main facility--housing for the correctional staff. The inmate's quarters are two-story dorms with central air and heating and carpeted floors, huge windows. Each inmate gets a locker and there are bathrooms at the end of each hall. Not a bad place at all to serve out a sentence. The facility was minimum security and housed "white-collar" criminals.. sort of a slap-on-the-wrist detention center for tax fraud, stuff like that.

I've been to this site several times but decided to take a couple friends who'd never been. I took tons of pictures so I'll just post in parts.

Visiting center

Lovely mural of the beach.. to remind the staff that there are better places in California than Boron.. :)

Apparently this urinal is broken

Just a hunch.. the toilet might be broken as well..

Children's visiting area

An elevator..? Nope.. an oven!! We found the chow hall :)

More to come later

I never knew that was there. I have driven up that road and didn't see a thing. From the satellite view it looks like there's a building with a white dome on top, what is that? Or did I get the wrong place?

Very good and interesting pictures.

There is a white structure that looks like a large tank in this facility, it either still does or use to contain an unmanned radar. Prior to being a prison this facility used to be a military installation.

FYI to all others, the entrance off 395 is not marked as being for anything in particular, and the facility itself is out of direct view of 395. I actually just posted some pictures of this place on my facebook this morning! One of my favorite places!

Edwards AFB is still very busy, so that is very possibly instrumentation for the test range. It's probably worth being circumspect about that facility. From there all the way up to I80 through Nevada there are radar and radio facilities. They employ uniformed and plain clothes security, even on BLM land.

I get a kick out of the cheerful cartoons on the wall in the visiting section, I wonder if all prisons have that or just ones like this for office crimes.

I always drive through the 395 to visit family and am pretty sure I pass through or at least near Boron, I didn't know that prison was there either.
