Cockatoo Island lies in the middle of the Sydney Harbour. It has had many roles over the years, including a factory, a prison, and a school for wayward girls. Now, (after being closed to the public for 100 years) it's a popular place to go to explore the past.

If you don't behave yourself, young lady, I'm sending you to Cockatoo Island! Hmm, it doesn't quite have the ring of terror of the Magdalene laundry.

Great photos anyway, very atmospheric.

I was about to make a quip about the Kiwi Air Squad fighting zombie sheep there but at the last minute figured it might be racist.

They probably don't have much reason to go to the island these days, since there aren't many trees. But there are certainly cockatoos all throughout Sydney.

Score! Cockatoos are awesome. One of my top reasons for wanting to go to Australia: Wild cockatoos.

They are! I'm American but have lived in Sydney for 13 years and I still love seeing cockatoos and other parrots. It's lovely when they come to your window or porch for snacks :)

Happily, it's no longer abandoned. There are lots of festivals held there. I took some photos of the Biennale and Outpost art festivals held there over the past couple of years. There are also music and film festivals held on Cockatoo Island. It's an excellent venue, so unique with all its history and industrial architecture. I love it. :)

Yes, the Biennale is always a lot of fun! Haven't yet made it to Outpost, but would love to! Would also like to try camping in one of the tents that the island has!

There was supposed to be another Outpost in 2013 but it was cancelled :( It's a shame because it's the perfect place for it. I haven't done the camping but I once stayed in one of the houses which was lovely, but the camping or "glamping" would be much more economical! It's so still and quiet at night when there's no one left on the island but the seagulls!
