This is the old [and obviously abandoned] veteran's hospital in Asheville, NC. I am not sure when the facility closed, but my guess is in the 60's (it was operational during WWII at least). I do know that haunted houses were held in the main hospital for a few years during the 80's and early-90's. The only reason it hasn't been torn-down is because the building contains asbestos. Our current operational V.A. hospital is right across the street.

I always thought it was incredibly creepy.. I wish I could go in. :/

Our bunny friend! He was really close and not afraid of us at all.

these are great pictures! did you have to take all of them around the fence? this would be amazing to get in to, I can only image what the inside looks like with how great the outside is...really nice photos too, thanks for sharing!

what kind of camera were you using? I like the grungy colors

You can walk right up to the Nurse's Quarters, but the main hospital is guarded with a razor-wire fence. I wish I could've seen the inside when they were doing haunted houses there.

I use a Sony Cybershot (7.2 MegaPixel), but I did the color editing with Irfanview!

Thanks!!

I went to one of the haunted houses years ago - I think it was 1990. Probably the last one. It was THRILLING to go inside, but sadly you really couldn't see much. Being dark and all. And it was pre-digital cameras so I couldn't sneak any pictures. But it was really really exciting - and incredibly scary - to go inside.

I didn't know about the asbestos. I'm glad that's kept it from being torn down.

Thanks!

Well it is a federally-owned building so busting in and getting caught would be a pretty big deal.. Plus, there's the asbestos 'n all. But I suspect that bums have been doing it anyway, at least in the Nurse's Quarters. There are perfectly-square-shaped cuts in some of the window screens.

Very impressive! It's nice to see such evocative work. There are sometimes ways to get into places like these (legally). Contact the site manager. Explain that you're a photographer and would like to document the decay of old hospital and would share the images. They may ask you to sign a waiver saying you won't sue the government if the place collapses around you. Considering the risks that many of us take getting into and exploring other locations, this shouldn't be a big deal.

It is on the east side -- on Riceville Road right across the street from the new V.A. hospital and across from Ingle's/Family Dollar/Pizza Hut/formerly Dunham's, etc..

This is so sad to see! I remember when these buildings were so beautiful. Several times when I was small, our family went to visit patients there and I particularly remember the open screened in porches and the lovely view from them. The setting of the hospital was particularly lovely with acres of green all around it. I used to pass on the school bus every day and always looked forward to to seeing such a pretty sight.

holy snap.

okay, i live in asheville, and i've always wanted to go there. my dad is a vet and goes for checkups at the operational VA, but i've never even gotten to go see that place. i'm definitely pumped about going to go there now, and i'm definitely gonna go inside.

sorry, i know this is random. i was trying to look up pictures of the VA to show off to people and this was the first hit on google. XD

haha, this post is like a year old and I get replies from it every few months. I think it's awesome.

Be careful about going inside... aside from being very old and full of asbestos, it's a government-owned facility so it's being watched and is possibly alarmed too. I haven't gone in, but I know of people who have.

Love the icon! I ♥ MCR too. :D

yeah, a lot of my friends have gone in. the nurse's quarters is not alarmed, but the main building is on the second floor. there's a hole in the fence towards the back that you can get into the main building with on the basement and first floor levels. it's a pretty notorious place around my school. i remember hearing stories of the first few groups of kids going in and coming out with handfuls of documents and stuff. kinda jealous, would have loved to see some of that stuff.

and yeah, my friend and i are planning to go sometime, and we're definitely getting on top of the whole alarm thing, and the asbestos, we're bringing surgical masks, her mom's a nurse so she can get a bunch of them pretty easily.

and thanks! mcr is prooobably my favorite band ever.

also, i like the other photos, the photoshopped ones. nice job on them.

i can assume you live here in ashevegas then?

Awesome! Definitely try to take some pics when you go in. It was used as a haunted house in the 80's, so I'm surprised some of the original stuff like that is still around. I'd love to see the nurse's quarters though. It's in much better shape than the regular hospital and hasn't been used for anything since, as far as I know.

And yeah, I'm in AVL. :D

YIKES!!!!!! I actually grew up about a fourth mile away from this building, and my parents still live there! I was googling images of the old VA buildings because my dad worked there until he retired in the mid 80s, and is interested in the history of the buildings.

These are FANTASTIC pictures. I just love this building - all of them, but especially this one.

Sorry to intrude here... I just thought you may like to know that I have pictures of the inside of the old VA medical center. I didn't go inside, I couldn't make it. But the paranormal investigators who went inside with a few guests saw and heard some amazing things in there. That's one place that should never be torn down. There's too much history - and to much currently taking place. You can see the pictures on our website soon at http://www.ghasp.webs.com

I came across this site recently while researching some family genealogy. My husband's grandmother died in this hospital in 1933 at the age of 33 years. These pictures are incredible, this has really inspired me to find out more about her! Her name was Bertha L. Purdy, she was a yeomanette in the Navy, she was married and had three young sons in 1930, and we imagine she was forcibly removed to this facility, probably never to see her family again. My husband's father was six years old when his mother left. She was there for about a year and a half until her death. My husband's grandfather promptly hooked up with a new lady, and Bertha was never mentioned again. Thanks a million for these cool pictures, and I look forward to seeing the interior shots!

I have personally been in there many times, during the summer inside the big building (I can't remember which that is called). It's pretty easy to get in, but they have a lot more security now patrolling it.

Some true inside pictures:

Down a hallway.

Broken glass and such on the floor which covers all the stairs.

Attic, top floor.

Room with a bunch of burned files.

A room inside the burned file room.

All taken on July 14th, 2008

I'm really not sure. The last time I went there, to take some friends from out of town, a VA Hospital Police cruiser rolled up and pretty much stopped that from happening. I told them some lame story about being lost and trying to get to wal-mart but they none they less didn't arrest me thank god. I can pretty much tell anyone how to get in/around there, I was consistently there all of last summer most everyday. So if you want to know any more, just message me and I'll be happy to give you my SN since its quicker.

I do not know if it is haunted but there is an old abandoned glass factory, I am pretty sure, on Brevard road in Asheville. You can't see it from the road and it is right on Bent Creek. I've been in there many times before as well but have never taken any pictures. Theres a road down to get into it, if you have a car, but it requires like a 30-point turn to get your car turned around at the bottom to get back up. It is definitely cool to go to.

There is a camera on the light post that looks at the hospital where you climb in, the last time I was there, I turned around and looked straight into it haha, that's when we figured out there was a camera and I heard about some ppl being caught going in there that I knew. If you wanna go in, than you better be pretty damn sneaky haha

So I have been in this place a few times before, all you gotta do is go to the nurses quarters side of the hospital and climb through the window of the door but you gotta go around the back of the hospital to get into the fence but they probably fixed that and I don't recomend going in because you WILL get busted by the cops, they have a camera on the light post where you climb to get in and because the asbestos, its caked like half an inch thick on the walls but anyways, me and a few friends had a paranormal expeirence there once. We were inside on the first floor walking down the main hall and stopped to check out some of the rooms and then all of a sudden we all heard these really loud foot steps running down the hall on the above floor, it definitley wasn't an animal. The foot steps were too heavy to be an animal and we were all together on the first floor. It definitley creeped us out but we kept going and went through every floor and didn't see or hear anything else. Im kinda of a skeptic but I believe that was paranormal, there's no other explanation. I just wanted to tell everyone what happened to me and my friends and if you have any thing happen to you, let me know by sending me an email: 89rscamaros@gmail.com, id love to hear your storied cuz this stuff really interests me, and I wanna know if its really haunted, thanks!
