The recent entry about Coney Island actually reminded me of an abandoned amusement park I actually drove by last summer on the Leomonster/Lunenburg town line in Massachusetts. It's funny, because I've actually been to this place when it was open. I stayed there on an overnight trip with my cub scout troop back in 1993 (and it was half abandoned even then!) It was really creepy/cool staying overnight in an amusement park. Definitely a highlight of my childhood. I think it closed down for good sometime around 1999-2000. It looks like it would be pretty easy to get inside there, as the fences are kinda caving in, but I was in a hurry so I didn't stay nearly as long as I would have liked.
The old entrance to the park. Sorry 'bout the quality. My camera's zoom is digital (not optical) so it sucks.
Some random ride by the entrance.
An abandoned water slide ride. The park is right next to a beautiful lake. I can remember this ride being abandoned back when I was there in 1993, complete with slimy green pool water.
The black hole. Whalom Park's signature roller coaster. It was a pretty good old fashoned wooden roller coaster. Probably totally unsafe, but hey it hasn't fallen down yet.
Another view of the Black Hole from the front side of the park.
Rumor has it that the place was/is slated to be demolished and a housing development (of course) is supposed to be built in its place, but I didn't see any signs of a housing development when I was there. So I think its pretty safe to say it'll be there for a while.
