Mr. C had the vision to establish an Italian-style family restaurant with a reputation for serving the best steak in Omaha. In order to accomplish his dream, in 1970 Mr. C closed the drive-in, increased indoor capacity, and began a tradition of purchasing the AkSarBen Grand Champion Steer at the yearly auction. Mr. C's reputation for quality steak, a family atmosphere and friendly customer service established the restaurant as an Omaha landmark. In 1988 Mr. C's added Piazza Di Maria, an outdoor garden of beautiful fountains, lovely flowers, greenery, and thousands of colored lights. Today, Mr. C's can accommodate 400 customers in the dining room plus more in the banquet rooms.

The appeal of Mr. C's is the restaurant's character and charm. The beautiful handpainted murals by local artist Bill Schook, resemble an historic Italian city. Even though the restaurant is closing the murals will be on display at the Durham Museum.

Adding to the ambience of Mr. C's is the abundance of Christmas lights. It is unclear when this tradition began, but according to legend a waitress asked to have the lights left up so her husband, serving the country in the military, could enjoy them when he returned in January. Her husband didn’t return until June and customers preferred the lights become left hanging for permanent display.

Mr C's closed its doors forever on September 30, 2007. The building is scheduled to be demolished.

The funniest thing was this padlocked gate with big spaces between a line of brick pillars with plenty of space to walk through (see next photo).

I have fond memories of going to Mr C's as a child. It is sad to see the passing of another landmark.

How sad. I remember going there as a very young child. I was talking about it with my dad a couple years ago and he couldn't believe that I could remember it. It's one of those places that you will never forget. Thanks for the memories.
