Alma Ladies College began it's construction on May 24th, 1878. It took just over three years to complete and, in October of 1881, it officially opened. The grounds featured a main building, a chapel, a hall, and a unique outdoor amphitheatre. The Victorian Gothic exterior of the front facade and the two flanking side facades made this structure unique in the City of St. Thomas, Ontario.
Alma College was slated for destruction but strong community support to restore this beautiful building kept its fate up in the air. Sadly, on May 28th, 2008 (a little over a month after my visit) Alma College burned down, with the remaining ruins demolished a couple days later after an emergency permit was obtained due to the fact that the ruins were 'unsafe'.
