Why the Marion 7400 dragline. This old beast is used in opening strip mining to dig out large amounts of rock to get down to the coal and eventually dig that out as well. According to what little info I can find a dragline of this size most likely weighs 640 tons and this is probably one of the smaller ones. The largest dragline ever ("Big Muskie") weighed 13,500 tons so this is just a baby compared to that. These were introduced in 1940 and production lasted for 34 years ending in 1974. There were 93 of these made and shipped all over the world. From what I can find the company that operated this mine owned 4 of them. 2 of them still exist which means there may be another abandoned one elsewhere. The coolest thing about these is they actually walk from place to place on a set of feet attached to the sides. These came in diesel or electric powered. I saw no diesel motors anywhere so I must assume this is electric. I have no idea how they actually got power into this thing. Perhaps a giant extension cord.
