A couple of weeks ago I got to do some urban exploring with, amazingly enough, permission. Emory Morseberger, who owns about half of greater Atlanta and specializes in redevelopment, has recently purchased City Hall East, which started life as a Sears Catalog order fullfillment
center back in the 1920s.
It's the largest building in Georgia in terms of enclosed floor under roof, at about two million square feet. Mr. Morseberger has seen about half of it, and seemed just as tickled to be exploring it as we were. Even at the peak of APD usage, the building was about 90% abandoned, and every floor holds surprises, either completely vacant expanses or stacked floor to ceiling with boxes holding Hartsfield parking receipts from the 1970s. I am not kidding.
