Mount Rainier, Maryland

Mount Rainier is a former trolley car suburb of Washington, D.C., located just two blocks from the District's northeast border in Prince George's County, Maryland.  Although it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 as a National Historic District, the listing is mostly honorific and doesn't have much "bite" when it comes to protecting properties. The city is a wee bit more than one square mile, and there are more than 60 vacant properties.

Here's a a sad old four-square.

In addition to some fantastic Sears catalog bungalows and four-squares, there's a good mix of vernacular forms leftover from when Mount Rainier was an agrarian backwater, before the trolley began operations in 1897.
