The Lyric and Alabama Theatres both followed a traditional mold in terms of set-up. Both complexes have extensive underground structures that are/were used for lounges, meeting halls and restrooms. Here is where the two sites diverge a bit. While the Alabama’s public areas below ground were and continued to follow these functions; the Lyric’s took another path after the theatre closed. The lower floor of the Lyric became a rescue mission for the alcoholics, addicts and prostitutes that once roamed the downtown of Birmingham.

The Lyric - The stairwell to the basement

The Lyric - The landing – fortunately there was another doorway to use

The Lyric – Broken door

The Lyric - Urinals

The Alabama – Men’s Room

The Alabama – Ladies Room Lounge

The Alabama – Ladies Room Lounge

The Alabama – Main Lounge

The Lyric – Restroom Mirror
Despite obvious smoke and limited fire damage, the mirror was in excellent condition – Silvered Glass

The Lyric – Storage room

The Lyric - rescue mission

The Lyric - rescue mission mail room

The Lyric - rescue mission

The Lyric – Dippy bird

The Lyric – Light fixture

The Lyric – Boiled warmth

The Lyric – Message board
I wondered how many people had passed through this rescue mission. When I saw this sign and looked closely, I realized that this place had hosted thousands over the years

The Lyric – Popeye and company

The Lyric – Messages from the past

The Lyric – Notes, numbers and more.

The Lyric - Notice these numbers almost all start with the old US phone numbering system (AL 5-3333) and operator assistance was required.

The Lyric – After 10 minutes of seeing column after column covered in notes we finally wandered up stairs.

Next up, the Lyric Building heading upstairs cuz the elevator doesn’t work

If you would like to assist in the restoration and recovery of The Lyric, donations can be made through their website ( http://www.lyricfineartstheatre.com/ ) and potentially through special events and activities to be announced in the near future. Folks, I’ll be posting more images (normal and comparison sets) soon.

It probably wasn't, but that Popeye drawing looks it was done by the artist!

Wonderful pictures, I always look forward to your updates on these two theatres.

I love the ornate oil heaters !!! Some parts seem like they could be having a banquet any minute.
