A $51 billion 'ghetto': Extraordinary images show Vladimir Putin's Sochi Olympic park lying desolate and abandoned one year after most expensive games in history.

Vladimir Putin's Sochi Olympic park

*The Winter Olympics of 2014 are a distant memory in the Russian Black Sea resort, with empty arenas left idle

*Fisht Stadium, the Bolshoy Ice Dome, the Tulip Inn hotel and the Adler Arena all sit in ghostly silence

Bolshoy Ice Dome

The Bolshoy Ice Dome - costing the Russian taxpayer £197 million - requires a budget of £9,900 a day to maintain, 'mainly for taking care of the ice'.

*The state is spending millions of roubles on having an ice hockey-team in Sochi, which in fact has a subtropical climate

*Skiers may still pack the slopes nearby owing to the collapsing rouble, but few are visiting the Olympic park and not staying at the Tulip Inn Hotel

Skiers not staying at Tulip Inn Hotel

The ski slopes around Sochi may be packed with skiers owing to the collapsing rouble but few of them are staying at the Tulip Inn Hotel. While the pistes up the mountains are now often packed with skiers - the collapsing rouble means Russians have switched from the likes of Courchevel to the Caucasus - many of the key sites of the games appear to have little prospect of being filled again.

*The Formula One track, which hosted the £99 million Russian Grand Prix last year, stands dusty and unused

One of the corners at the Formula One track with Fisht Stadium and its only partially dismantled roof visible behind. Incredibly it was only used twice - for the opening and closing ceremonies

*The flame has long since gone out

Russian taxpayers are picking up the bill for this 'perfect museum of corruption', according to a local journalist. The company which owns some of the complex is about to go bankrupt, according to the Kommersant newspaper

*At least two oligarchs involved in building the lavish facilities are dumping their toxic assets on the state

Sealed rubbish bins have no one to fill them at the multi-billion dollar site, with the empty Bolshoy Ice Dome (top right) in the background

I remember how there were so many talks about "what will we do with all this structure afterward?". We ultimately rejected it because of that. So did Denver a few years ago, IIRC.

yes, the wise ones keep their distance and life goes on as usual, the suckers get robbed by the event and experience boom and bust. it's all about the prestige i guess, like putin, being able to say, we can afford to do it. we are important here. and then the ukraine became a pawn and target for heavy industry and banking as a step between russia and the west. sochi was cool, because it brought russia to the world stage. it carried political relevance. spare no expense i guess...

Should I tell something and partly make a dissonant point of view - it seems all the people of Earth are so worried about the Russian corruption, dictatorship, doping scandal? I don't know... I was at this Olympic village on a step of its building and without any intention to sound as a patriot or idiot I can assure you that all the dramatics here are laughable. All the Russian Black Sea coast had needed the investments strongly with the last decade of growing flow of tourists to rebuild the roads, to build new infrastructure and especially at the narrow coast line at Sochi. What you see on these photos is a bullshit, the real season in Sochi starts at May and ends at October, so you'll see the places on these photos will be full with tourists. Plus were made the new bridges, roads, funiculars, train lines for for Olympic matters - it was an investments for the future not for a brief moment of games. I had spoke to the locals on a stage of building and never saw people which were somehow not enthusiastic about the Sochi games - it was the big money and they were coming into Sochi even if from the other regions of Russia who cares when every second Russian will come/came to Sochi for a summer weekend? What is about a corruption - I don't know much to speak about but what surprises me is why people aboard are excited so. There are several whole empty cities at China and nobody gives a fuck but here the sport complex at the most popular seaside resort at Russia are empty at the winter... if you look the right now photos from the sixteen kilometres high in the mountains you'll see a lot of people there and there are many new hotels and so on there, many new jobs for locals.
The corruption in Russia is so interesting I think because it is not all in Russia are stolen by rich guys and the resources of Russia should be working for the people's interests? Not like it is in the best of best kind capitalistic West - all worthy things are long private and no one sane rich guy would like to build a sport complex at Detroit for example then it will be much interesting to build a new plant at China?

Btw, I am not irritated or don't want to sound as one but more pleased by the interest to my country - together we will fight out all the corruption in our universe! ;)

thank you mike! we rarely get the truth about other countries here in the west. our media is used for western propaganda.

question, when there is spin in the media, it is usually done to create sensation for public attention, or it can be instigated by someone opposing the project. when i see something presented in this nature, i question, "who does it serve to publish this spin?" who do you think could have the agenda to make the olympics look wasteful? when sochi olympics were on, i was impressed by how russia seemed to grow in the public eye, and then suddenly the attacks happened in the ukraine. do you think this may have been putin world strategy or western media trying to make russia look bad?

what is your opinion? personally i do not know, i found this on a news feed..

interesting to see the previous post of abandoned olympics from rio brazil..

"do you think this may have been putin world strategy or western media trying to make russia look bad?"

Is the Putin's world strategy not to let our sportsmen to get to new games, to drop the oil prices to make Russians poorer, to force EU to make the sanctions against Russia? What's for?
I am kinda tied of all the Russian news channels which are constantly telling about this new invisible war and kinda afraid where all this could leads us all...

Certainly there is here in Russia a movement of children now which has been paid from the West to show that the situation in Russia is far from stable. It seems Obama had told that our economy is in ruins. What is western media is telling about the reasons - the incredible Russian corruption, Putin's regime and who knows what else is bad in Russia but if the Western money/militants really like to do something harmful to Putin's regime in Russia then do something really good for Ukraine to show how it is wonderful to live with pro-western authorities of Ukraine but nothing will be helpful now because instead of solving the problems it will be always easier to ignite an unstoppable war and be constantly telling that Russia is again fighting with Ukraine, Russia wants to destroy the free and wealthy Ukraine, oh the bloodsuckers are, those bad, very bad Russians...

yes, understand that obama is part of the milton friedman banking system in chicago university who undermined russia and and south american governments to collapse the economies under gorbachev and countries in south america. this also involved the cia and contra drug smuggling and arms trade. anything to make money..

the chicago boys. make both sides pay..

" who do you think could have the agenda to make the olympics look wasteful?"

There were such discussions in Russia from the beginning but without any enthusiastic patriotism I could tell my point of view - it was a good and very needed project, there was possibly some money stolen as they could be everywhere, you could ask your Navy officers, but why Westerners are so excited? Do you think that we Russians are living like the people are in North Korea and if we don't like something we couldn't go to the streets and tell about it?
All these serial about making Russia looks bad is going from the American mass media, not from other countries as I know it. Who needs it, interested, could pay for it? Many people could think they will benefit from weak Russia. For example Japan wants our territories and it could be easier for it to get some if the Russia will be weak without independent Putin or dry from civil war as it was in 1917 special thanks for Germany interests to get Russia out of the next world war second. Some authorities in Eastern Europe are making hysteria about the Russian army is getting stronger - you call these people there are a lot.
If you ask me who would like the strong independent Russia instead of some former Soviet Union countries which don't like a civil war on their territories as it is in Syria, Iraq then I will be thoughtful answering. Actually all our neighbouring countries or their authorities if thinking about the best for their nations not to have a hell near their borders, should be interested in strong Russia but it looks like all our west neighbours have gone insane...

thank you very much for answering.

these things i do understand as you explain them. russia is attempting to keep national sovereignty away from world banks and have control on its own people land and resources. america is not the cause of the media. america is also a pawn in the game with nato and un to destabilize all countries under the world banks and the new world order. it is a style of global imperialism similar to the old romans in europe. russia kicked out rothschild banks and arrested crooked bankers a few years ago. america is run by those global banking interests and israel, and maybe syria. i don't know. i cannot say about china either, i do not understand politics in china. china is very complicated and now chinese millionaires are buying real estate, natural resources and business in canada and western countries. it is maybe similar elsewhere. america is controlled by few old families that are robber bankers. they are not for a strong country. they are for world control of money and power. americans do not understand this, because their media doesn't tell them the truth. the global media turns countries like russia and america against each other to create conflict and destabilize the governments. then they move in to control the banks. putin i believe is one reason the new world order did not achieve its agenda yet to date.

yes i would like to know what your thoughts are about syria and iraq.

the Olympics are simply an excuse for the IOC to fleece money from whatever country are they currently being hosted in. even Greece (the home of the Olympics) doesn't want them because they are already wise to the scam.
