Back to Elkport, Iowa for part 3 of a 4-part series!

DANGER ASBESTOS :O

there were just a few store or business-type buildings around. I suppose it was a very small town!

the "D" house

the only evidence of abandonment on this house is the broken windows.

you can see the road going up behind these houses. Elkport is in a little bowl at the convergence of 2 or 3 rivers. Some might wonder why the town was ever built in the first place in such an obviously doomed spot. A valid point but one that angers many who live in flood-prone areas. I don't know the answer, maybe its just that people like to live where they've always lived. I, for one, would move back to Grand Forks in a heartbeat if I could find a job there. Stupid, maybe, but you get attached to a place...

Is that black mold on the ceiling? ew...

this house, like many, were missing their siding. This home wrap looks newer, so maybe someone was planning on fixing it up before the town was bought out. Or maybe its the one holdout house (the cnn.com article mentioned there was one).

No more DirecTV for these folks!

FOr some odd reason the house with the "D" on it seemed to hit me. After a tornado we had here in atlanta back in i think 96 many houses were destroyed and d's were put on the houses. Some times even borded up by the county officals if they were to bad.

I didn't even think about it before. Maybe I was blocking it out. I swear the house I grew up in got a big "D" on it before they tore it down. I think lots of them got D's. Like the other responder said, it must stand for "demolish" or something like that.
